Hot and sunny summer conditions greeted international acts Colin Hay of Men At Work fame, Alanis Morissette and The Orchestra starring former members of Electric Light Orchestra as they played the second of three shows in the tour.
Providing the opportunity for local New Zealand artists to perform to audiences of this scale, organisers this year offered the opening set of the day to Paul Foulds as concert goers set themselves up for the day with their rugs, chilly bins and sunscreen.
For the first time, a fourth international act were added to this year’s Summer Concert Tour line up. Nashville based Fairground Saints brought to the Taupo concert goers their unique California country sound.
With the picturesque back drop of the Waikato River in the background, Colin Hay of Men At Work fame was next to take to stage early afternoon and wowed concert goers with his unmistakable hits , entertaining them with songs including Who Can It Be Now , Down Under and Be Good Johnny.
Next up was Alanis Morissette. Touring New Zealand for the first time in 20 years, she captured the audience mid-afternoon with hits from her No. 1 selling album, Jagged Little Pill, getting the crowd singing along to the likes of You Oughta Know, Hand In My Pocket and Ironic.
The Orchestra starring former members of Electric Light Orchestra, performing their incredible stable of ELO hits such as Mr Blue Sky, Evil Woman, Livin’ Thing, Telephone Line and Sweet Talkin’ Woman, promised to be an amazing end to the day when everyone will be on their feet for Don’t Bring Me Down.
Amanda Calvert, CEO of Greenstone Entertainment comments, “Two Saturday’s and two sell-out shows, we can’t thank all the fans enough for coming along to support these fantastic artists who make the long journey to New Zealand to share their first class talent with us all. We now move onto the final sold out show of the tour in the amazing Whitianga.”
This year’s line-up has proved to be hugely popular with all three concerts in the tour selling out only a month after going on sale last year, and while tomorrows Whitianga Summer Concerts is sold out, Greenstone Entertainment remind concert goers of a ticket exchange forum available on Facebook:

Summer Concert Tour Announces New Artists
Greenstone Entertainment, promoters of the upcoming sold out Summer Concert Tour, have today confirmed two new artists as part of their January 2018 line-up.
In a statement from George Thorogood & The Destroyers management, “Due to a family illness, George Thorogood and The Destroyers will be unable to perform at the upcoming Summer Concert Tour. The Summer Concert Tour will proceed as planned. We sincerely appreciate the support of our loyal fans during this difficult time.”
Greenstone Entertainment CEO, Amanda Calvert says “We send our best wishes to George Thorogood & The Destroyers and family at this time and completely understand that family must come first. We’d like to reassure our fans that the Summer Concert Tour will go ahead as planned featuring Colin Hay of Men At Work fame and Alanis Morissette.”
In addition, Greenstone Entertainment are pleased to announce that taking the place of George Thorogood & The Destroyers will be The Orchestra starring former members of Electric Light Orchestra (ELO)”. When asked for input from fans on who they’d like to see, these performers have been right up the list and on Greenstone’s radar for some time. This change of circumstances has enabled organisers to include them in the 2018 line up as opposed to future years.
Members of The Orchestra include Mik Kaminski “The Blue Violin” and Louis Clark “Keyboards and Arrangements” formerly from the original ELO of the 70’s and 80’s. Their show will feature all of those instantly recognisable hits including Telephone Line, which spent 20 weeks in the NZ Charts and peaked at No 1, along with other NZ Top 10 chart toppers, Don’t Bring Me Down, Evil Woman, and Livin’ Thing.
Amanda adds “We’re also pleased to confirm an additional international act for the three show tour, Santa Barbara-born and now Nashville-based band, Fairground Saints. We’re sure concert goers will find the band’s unique California country sound, layered three part harmonies, and solid musicianship nothing short of impressive. This also means concert goers will now experience four international artists at each concert.”
With its unique afternoon atmosphere, the concerts will take place in the amazing summer holiday locations of Queenstown on Sat 20 Jan, Taupo on Sat 27 Jan and Whitianga on Sun 28 Jan.

THE ORCHESTRA Starring Former Members ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA (ELO)
Not all rock was created equal and The Orchestra Starring Former Members Of Electric Light Orchestra is living proof. With a pedigree reaching into the 70’s and 80’s with former members of Electric Light Orchestra and ELO Part II, The Orchestra Starring Former Members Of Electric Light Orchestra has launched their 2018 tour, heralding a continuing era of unparalleled symphonic rock.
All six members of The Orchestra Starring Former Members Of Electric Light Orchestra were formerly ELO Part II, with two of the six members – Mik Kaminski (the famous “Blue Violin”) and keyboardist Louis Clark – dating back to the Electric Light Orchestra in the 1970s and 1980s. The former members of ELO and ELO Part II, touring domestically and internationally since 2001 as The Orchestra Starring Former Members of Electric Light Orchestra, are known as the “all time masters of symphonic rock” with the use of strings, synthesizers, and exquisitely layered vocals. For many people, the “ELO SOUND” is as close as they will ever get to classical music.
ELO hits from yesteryear are the cornerstone of The Orchestra Starring Former Members Of Electric Light Orchestra’s repertoire, including Strange Magic, Do Ya, Don’t Bring Me Down, Evil Woman, Livin’ Thing, Turn to Stone, Sweet Talkin’ Woman, Telephone Line, Ma-Ma-Ma Belle, Mr. Blue Sky and Roll Over Beethoven.
Call that sound The ELO Phenomenon … because fans all over the world say I “Can’t Get It Out of My Head!”
Alanis Morissette
Alanis Morissette last performed on New Zealand soil back in 1998. Her 1995 debut album, Jagged Little Pill, featuring hit songs You Oughta Know, Hand In My Pocket and Ironic, peaked at No. 1 on the NZ charts, and ranks at number 33 in the top 1000 bestselling albums of all time in New Zealand. Hit singles Hands Clean, Thank U and Ironic have also reached No. 1, 2 & 3 respectively on the New Zealand singles charts.
Alanis has sold over 60 million albums worldwide and was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2015. She has achieved 7 Grammy Award wins, along with Rolling Stone magazine having ranked her Jagged Little Pill album on its Women in Rock – The 50 Essential Albums list.
Since 1995 Alanis Morissette has been one of the most influential singer-songwriter-musicians in contemporary music. Her deeply expressive music and performances have earned vast critical praise, 14 Canadian Juno Awards, 7 Grammy Awards (with an additional 14 nominations) and a Golden Globe nomination.
Colin Hay
Who can forget dancing and singing along to Australian 80’s legends- Men at Work – when Colin Hay pumped out hit after hit tunes from their No. 1 selling Business As Usual album. As frontman, guitarist and principle songwriter for eighties hit machine Men at Work, Colin Hay is responsible for some of the most identifiable sounds in pop music, including hit songs Down Under, Be Good Johnny and Who Can It Be Now to name just a few. Business As Usual spent an incredible 75 weeks in the New Zealand charts, ranking in the top 100 bestselling albums of all time in New Zealand. In 1982 Men at Work won a Grammy Award for Best New Artist. Men at Work’s second album, Cargo, also peaked at No.1 on the NZ album charts in 1983.
Since moving to Los Angeles in 1989, he’s made 13 solo albums and toured solidly and successfully to a broad American, UK and Australasian fan base. Highlights in Colin’s career include touring with Ringo Starr’s All Starr Band in 2003 and 2008, performing on Scrubs and Men at Work playing at the closing ceremony of the 2000 Sydney Olympics in Sydney. His new album Fierce Mercy explores themes of love, loss and mortality, but always with the singular perspective and insightful wit that defines Hay’s work. Hay’s everyman charm, familiar voice, and clever observations continue to resonate with audiences across the globe. Hay is at the absolute peak of his craft. As a writer and vocalist, he has never been more masterful.
“Colin Hay isn’t just an icon or figure of musicians past; he’s a seamless representation of the greats of our time, alive and well in the here and now.”

Taranaki Daily News Issues Retraction via stuff.co.nz
Posted on August 9, 2017
We need to address this article with our valued Greenstone customers. Greenstone Entertainment and Alanis Morissette are NOT and NEVER have been in discussion with The Taranaki Council to host a 4th concert.
Read moreEarlier in the week we were sent an article via stuff.co.nz regarding including a 4th venue in The Summer Concert Tour 2018.
We need to address this article with our valued Greenstone customers. Greenstone Entertainment and Alanis Morissette are NOT and NEVER have been in discussion with The Taranaki Council to host a 4th concert. This information is completely invalid. We know that there are lots of venues out there that would love to offer this line up, who wouldn’t!
The ONLY 3 venues that Alanis will be playing at are;
- Gibbston Valley Winery Saturday 20 Jan
- Taupo amphitheatre Saturday 27 Jan
- Whitianga Waterways Sunday 28 Jan
Below is the retraction that was posted via stuff.co.nz for The Taranaki Council;
The “slim chance” council believed it had to be added to Alanis Morisette’s upcoming tour of the regions has been stamped out by the music promoter.
Last week it was announced every 30-something millennial’s favourite alternative-rocker will return to the country after 20 years for a three-date music festival in January.
And while the Canadian musician was solely taking her 90s classics such as Hand in my Pocket and Ironic to the provinces, Taranaki was forced to swallow a Jagged Little Pill when it was left from the line up.
But New Plymouth District Council venues manager Nelita Bryne had said if promoters needed a fourth venue the council would do all it could to secure the concert.
“If there was an opportunity to host a fourth concert we would be doing all we can to secure it,” she said.
“There’s a very slim chance.”
The 43-year-old was playing as part of the annual Summer Concert Series put on by Greenstone Entertainment who had contracts with the three venues named in her coming tour.
However, a Greenstone Entertainment spokesman has since said there will be no deviation from the promoted tour venues in Taupo, Queenstown and Whitianga, and Morrisette would not be performing in Taranaki.
Morissette would tour alongside George Thorogood & The Destroyers and former Men at Work star Colin Hay.
The pop-star’s last New Zealand performance was a free concert in Auckland and played out to more than 15,000 people.
Despite potentially missing out on having Morissette come to Taranaki, the Bowl will be filled this summer when it packs out with fans of British folk legend, Cat Stevens.
The commemorative A Cat’s Attic Peace Train Tour, marks the 50th anniversary of his first hit single and debut album, Matthew and son, and would also stop in Auckland and Christchurch.
